FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEFIANCE, OH – The Defiance County Safe Communities Coalition gathered for its quarterly meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2026, to review local traffic safety trends and continue its work to prevent crashes and save lives. During the meeting, partners discussed fatal crashes and ways coalition partners can prevent them in our community.
So far this year, Defiance County has experienced one traffic fatality. Across Ohio, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office reports 181 traffic-related deaths in 2026, a 10% increase from 164 fatalities in 2025. While Ohio has seen a decrease in fatal crashes in the last several years, this year’s data show there is still important work to be done.
The Defiance County Safe Communities Coalition is urging drivers and passengers to take simple, proven steps that can save lives every day:
- ✅ Buckle up—every trip, every time.
- ✅ Stay focused—put distractions away.
- ✅ Follow the speed limit.
- ✅ Never drive impaired—alcohol and drugs greatly increase crash risk.
- ✅ Obey traffic signs and signals—they are designed to protect everyone.
“Safe driving isn’t just a personal responsibility—it’s a community commitment.” said Katie Marbaugh, Coordinator for the Defiance County Safe Communities Coalition. “Seat belts save lives, driving distracted puts everyone on the road at risk, and every decision we make behind the wheel matters. Together, we can prevent tragedies and keep our roads safer for everyone by taking simple steps to save lives..”
As 2026 continues, the coalition remains committed to education, awareness, and enforcement efforts that reduce crashes and protect lives. Remember: safe driving habits make a difference—every trip, every time.
