HICKSVILLE, OH – The Defiance County Health Department is inviting older adults to take an important step toward maintaining their independence, confidence, and quality of life by registering for A Matter of Balance, a free, award-winning fall prevention program beginning Tuesday, June 23, at Summit 60 in Hicksville.
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but they are not an inevitable part of aging. A Matter of Balance is designed to help participants reduce their fear of falling, increase physical activity, and learn practical strategies to prevent falls both at home and in the community.
The program will meet Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Summit 60 Hicksville, located at 708 E. High Street, for eight consecutive weeks. Each session lasts two hours and combines group discussion, goal setting, practical safety tips, and gentle exercises designed to improve strength and balance.
Participants will learn how to:
- View falls as controllable and preventable
- Set realistic goals for increasing activity levels
- Identify and reduce fall risks in and around the home
- Improve strength, balance, and confidence through exercise
The class is ideal for:
- Adults concerned about falls
- Individuals looking to improve balance, flexibility, and strength
- Anyone who has experienced a fall in the past
- People who have limited activities because of concerns about falling
“Many people believe that falls are a normal part of getting older, but that is not true,” said Katie Marbaugh, Public Health Nurse with the Defiance County Health Department. “Falls are often preventable, and programs like A Matter of Balance give participants the tools and confidence they need to stay active and independent. In addition to building strength and learning practical fall prevention strategies, participants also benefit from the social connections and support they gain from others in the class.”
Participation is free, but registration is required.
For more information or to register, contact Katie Marbaugh at 419-784-3818 or Karlee at 419-769-8046.
