Over 100+ attend Defiance County’s First International Overdose Awareness Day Event [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=""]The Defiance County Drug Free Coalition, along with Defiance College, hosted the first-ever Defiance County International Overdose Awareness Day on September 3, 2024, from 4-7 PM. The event took place at Defiance College in the Serrick Center’s Hubbard Banquet Room, where over 100 community members attended. Food was available for purchase from the Defiance College Dining Hall and two food trucks: Seasoned Mobile Grill and Aqua Ice.
This day is meant to remember those lost to overdose without shame and work toward a future without overdose deaths. The theme for this year was “Together We Can,” emphasizing the community's power to stop overdoses when we work together.
The event included a resource fair with information from mental health and substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery organizations. Free items like Narcan, prescription medication locking caps, bags, t-shirts, and more were given away.
Ten speakers shared their stories about recovery or losing someone to overdose. The event ended with a memorial and prayer for those in Defiance County who have died from an overdose. Attendees also received flower seed hearts to plant in memory of a loved one or in hope of a future without overdoses.
“The Defiance County Drug Free Coalition felt that this was an important step to take in increasing awareness of and prevention of overdoses in our county. This first event provided a lot of great information for the community, resources for the community, and several testimonies that the community can learn from. We hope to make this event an annual opportunity to increase awareness and prevention in Defiance County.” said Jessica West, Health Promotion Specialist for the Defiance County Health Department and Secretary of the Defiance County Drug Free Coalition.
